This is the very first issue. And we all celebrated when that hit the press!

I used co-workers as models for the first issues.
(That's MJ on the left page, and Kristen licking the plate on the right page.)
Ed had his own column. "Well-Fed Ed"

There's our fearless leader, Glenn, in the chef's hat.

On page four there was always a "Local Treasure" column.
(A "Local Treasure" was a vendor who sold us their products
and lived within driving distance of the store.)
Each market had their own "Local Treasure" so there were
three companies right in the community, featured every issue.

On page six was a column featuring a different store employee every month.
"My Sunflower Favorites" was a friendly and conversational way
to put a personal face on Sunflower.

The produce page turned into a favorite of mine.

The nature of fresh produce meant that the produce manager (Greg)
was sometimes still getting pricing and availability
right up to the printing deadline.

Having not drawn many vegetables, and having so little time
I made a sort of jumble of fresh produce really big
right in the middle of the page.

(They were rough, but recognizable!)

If I remember correctly, there wasn't much copy written for the back page.
Aside from a big sale in health and beauty products
(being phased out to bring in our own private label)
I did a quick illustration just to take up as much room as possible!
